Nearly two weeks after Patrick Roy abruptly resigned as head coach and vice president of hockey operations, the Colorado Avalanche have tabbed his replacement.Jared Bednar, who just led the Lake Erie Monsters to a Calder Cup title in the American Hockey League, is the man to take over the Avs in these unique circumstances. It will be his first job of any kind at the Matt Martin Men Jersey NHL level, which makes him an interesting choice to lead a team in need of a fresh start.Other candidates who were reportedly considered among the finalists for the job included former Florida Panthers head coach and current Chicago Blackhawks a sistant Kevin Dineen and Washington Capitals a sistant coach Lane Lambert."After profiling the type of coach I wanted for our team and going through an interview proce s with several good candidates, I believe that Jared Bednar is the best person to lead this team behind the bench," said Avalanche GM Joe Sakic in a statement. "Jared's track record of succe s as a head coach in the American Hockey League speaks for itself and he is considered to be one of the top up-and-coming coaches in our busine s." Bednar, who never played in the NHL but had a lengthy minor league career, has been a rising star in the coaching world. He worked his way up as an a sistant coach in the ECHL through the ranks before catching more attention after leading the South Carolina Stingrays to the ECHL's Kelly Cup in 2008-09.He also had various coaching jobs in the AHL, including head coaching jobs with the Peoria Rivermen and Springfield Calvin Pickard Women Jersey Falcons. When the Columbus Blue Jackets switched affiliations from the Falcons to the Lake Erie Monsters, who have since been renamed the Cleveland Monsters, Bednar was retained.He led the Monsters to a 43-22-11 record before a tremendous postseason run to the Calder Cup, in what turned into a championship-filled summer for the city of Cleveland. The 44-year-old Saskatchewan native had just signed a new two-year extension to stay with the Blue Jackets, but like most AHL coaches, Bednar presumably had an out clause if an NHL team came calling.He'll inherit an Avalanche roster that could be said to have underachieved over the last two years. After winning the Central Division in Roy's first season behind the bench, the team struggled to make the playoffs in each of the last two campaigns. Here are some things to know about what this hiring means for the Avalanche:1. Bednar will be inheriting a uniquely difficult situationBednar has a little le s than a month before training camp begins to get himself acclimated, to get in touch with the players and to start preparing and planning for his first NHL season. Not only that, but he's replacing a popular coach that a large segment of the fan base was fully behind. Roy's No. 33 hangs in the rafters at Pepsi Center. Now we'll have a better idea of what was to blame for Avs' poor po se sion numbers Over the three years Patrick Roy led the Avalanche, they were among the worst po se sion teams in the NHL. Their system was consistently panned by those in the analytics community as Colorado really struggled when it came to shot generation. Even with the number of skill players the Avs had, they didn't nece sarily have great depth to really push teams.So were the poor po se sion metrics a result of coaching or was it player personnel? One of the reasons Roy left was his lack of input in player personnel decisions despite his role in the hockey operations department. He didn't feel he had the guys he needed to get the job done and so he bailed. As Bednar comes in, with some new faces on the roster but largely the same cast, whatever he implements is going to be held up to the previous standard. How it succeeds or fails will also give a better indication of who deserved most of the blame for the team's putrid po se sion metrics. 3. Bednar is going to need some help from the front office no matter whatThere's no question that the Avalanche have a really strong central core in terms of talent. Matt Duchene, Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Nikita Zaitsev Men Jersey Landeskog, Barrie, Johnson and Varlamov offers a really good place to start from. There's also help on the way in promising prospect Mikko Rantanen. The club certainly lacks depth at the NHL level, however. So Roy at least had a point there.The team decided to go easy this summer in free agency. Given the weakne s of the market, that was probably the right play. But that means they're going to need patience this year to sort things out. Small changes could still make a big difference, too. If the i sues were tied to the systems, a coach is going to be an easy fix. Here's how other recent AHL champion coaches are faring in the NHLBednar joins a growing list of recent NHL coaches who earned NHL jobs following succe s at the AHL level. In fact, four of the last five AHL coaches to lead their team to the Calder Cup are now working with NHL teams. The other three coaches also never played in the NHL, like Bednar.It's been a growing trend that teams don't automatically go with an ex-NHLer behind their bench. Considering the Avs are going from one of the best goalies in the history of the game to a virtual unknown, this could be a fascinating case study as well.The results for the other coaches have been mixed.Jon Cooper of the Tampa Bay Lightning has been a real succe s story so far. Having never played at a high level of any kind, Cooper took over the Lightning late in the 2012-13 season, which followed his winning the Calder Cup with the Norfolk Admirals. He has ama sed a record of 147-90-25 with the Lightning and his club has made it at least to the Eastern Conference Final in each of the last two seasons. The jury is still out a bit on Jeff Blashill, who won the Calder Cup with the Grand Rapids Griffins before replacing Mike Babcock with the Detroit Red Wings. He only has one season under his belt so far and the Wings reached the playoffs for a 25th consecutive year.Then there's Willie Desjardins, who now has two seasons under his Ben Smith Kids Jersey belt with the Vancouver Canucks. The club made the playoffs in his first season, but had a really rough season last year. He hasn't had a whole lot to work with out there yet, so it's difficult to judge fully how he has done.Bednar actually has more pro hockey experience as a player than all three of those coaches combined. On top of that, he has spent more time as a profe sional coach as Cooper, Desjardins and Blashill all cut their teeth as coaches in the junior ranks before getting called up to the pros. That could help him when he transitions.
